Menstrual Health Project: Empowering Indigenous Youth
We are excited to launch a new Menstrual Health Project designed to support and empower Indigenous youth in the NWT. Our initiative includes three key components (listed below) aimed at improving menstrual health education, access to resources, and fostering a supportive community environment.
Through these initiatives, NBC aims to provide culturally relevant, accessible menstrual health education and resources to Indigenous youth, creating a supportive environment where they can feel empowered, informed, and proud of their journey.
1. Menstrual Health Zine for Teens
We are creating a creative zine to provide accessible, culturally relevant menstrual health education for Indigenous youth.
The zine will feature art and information on menstruation, co-created with Indigenous artists.
This resource will be shared with local schools through monthly distribution in our Menstrual Resource Nooks.
2. Menstrual Product Nooks
We are establishing Wooden Menstrual Resource Nooks around Yellowknife and other communities to ensure Indigenous youth have free and easy access to menstrual products and educational resources.
Each nook will be stocked with pads and tampons for youth to take as needed. Nooks will also include educational pamphlets and other supportive resources.
3. Menstrual Hygiene Workshops
We are hosting Menstrual Hygiene Workshops in Yellowknife schools to provide comprehensive education on menstruation, focusing on hygiene, self-care, and reproductive health.
These workshops aim to reduce stigma, foster confidence, and help youth feel empowered about their menstrual journey.
In partnership with DIVA, Northern Birthwork Collective is offering Northerners free menstrual cups!
