My name is Grace (or Gracie) Chambers and my pronouns are she/her. I grew up in Yellowknife and I’m so happy to call the north my home. I acknowledge with gratitude that I am a person of settler descent on this land. 

For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in birth and babies. I can recall a favourite childhood Christmas gift: the pregnant Barbie with the magnetized, detachable pregnant belly. I must have been 7 years old. Fast forward a couple years and I was fighting with my siblings for the remote after school so I could watch A Baby Story and Bringing Home Baby on TLC before my parents came home from work. A couple years later I jumped at the opportunity to enter the babysitting scene. To no one’s surprise, after high school, I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, specializing in perinatal nursing.

For the past 7 years I have been working as a Registered Nurse in Yellowknife, predominantly in Obstetrics and abortion care, as well as 2 years with the Maternal / Child Health Team at Public Health. I have also been a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) for 4 years now, while I teach various styles, naturally a passion of mine is teaching prenatal and postnatal yoga.

More recently I have been working towards becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in order to increase infant feeding support in the north. All this to say, when the opportunity to join the Northern Birthwork Collective Steering Committee was presented, I was immediately intrigued.

As a member, I hope to be able to utilize my education, professional experience, and the many things I have learned over the years from northern pregnant folks. I’m honoured to be joining this team and looking forward to learning from one another and sharing my passion for reproductive rights and the betterment of supports for all birthing people of the north.
