ALLYSA FELIX (SHE/THEY)
-
Steering Committee Member
Akaana! My name is Allysa Felix, also known as Navaluk, and I'm thrilled to be joining the steering committee this year. I'm originally from Tuktoyaktuk but now I call Inuvik home. I come from a family with deep artistic roots and strong matriarchal influences, which I take so much pride in. My grandfather, who is an incredible artist, gave me my Inuvialuktun name. Speaking of names, it's interesting to note that due to the impacts of colonialism, my last name should technically be Nuyaviak. The government had trouble pronouncing it, so they gave my family the last name Felix instead.
As a 2Spirit and queer individual living in the North, I truly believe that my journey is something unique and special. I love being Inuk! However, it's not without its challenges, especially in smaller communities where homophobia and transphobia may be more prevalent. This can sometimes make it difficult to find a sense of community, but the truth is, there are plenty of people out there who are supportive and understanding.
For me, inclusive language and creating a safe space for vulnerable Native youth have always been incredibly important. I also feel strongly about protecting our environment and the well-being of animals. After all, our land is our future, and we can't have one without the other. Apart from my advocacy work, I have a few other passions that bring me joy. I enjoy beading, reading and writing, painting, and spending time by the water.
These activities allow me to express myself and find peaceful moments in my busy life. I'm really excited to be part of this committee and to collaborate with all of you and offer the services and values of the Northern Birthwork Collective to my community
